so When Should You Get Your Senior Pictures Done?
If there’s one question I get asked all the time, it’s this: “When should we schedule senior pictures?”
And honestly? There’s not one perfect answer. It really depends on your style, your schedule, and the vibe you’re going for. But after photographing so many seniors around Rockwall and Heath, I’ve learned a lot about what works best for each season. So let’s break it down.
Summer Before Senior Year
Summer is always a favorite, and for good reason. The days are longer, which means more time to shoot in that dreamy golden light. You don’t have school, sports, or homework to worry about yet, so it’s one of the easiest times to fit a session in.
I’ve had seniors tell me they loved doing theirs in the summer because they felt fresh—just out of junior year and ready to kick off senior year with confidence. Plus, summer outfits are always fun: sundresses, sandals, or even casual shorts and sneakers.
The only catch? Texas heat. If you don’t mind sweating a little (or a lot), we can make it work. But if you hate being hot, you may want to look at fall.
Fall of Senior Year
Fall is probably the most popular season for senior pictures. And honestly—it makes sense. The weather is cooler, the leaves start changing, and you’ve got all the cozy outfits: sweaters, boots, flannels, you name it.
One of my favorite fall sessions was with a senior who loved football and wanted pictures in her letterman jacket. The crisp fall air and the stadium lights made those shots feel so her. That’s the thing about fall—it just feels like senior year.
Also, a lot of schools have yearbook deadlines in the fall, so it’s a smart time to get pictures done and not have to stress later.
Winter of Senior Year
Winter is less common, but it can be so underrated. The light in winter is softer, moodier, and perfect if you’re into a more unique vibe. I’ve done sessions with seniors in cute jackets and scarves, and the whole gallery just felt different—in the best way.
If you’re not into sweating in August or dealing with the fall rush, winter might be your perfect time.
Spring of Senior Year
Spring is the final stretch. If you’ve waited until now, you’re not alone—it’s actually one of the busiest seasons for senior pictures. Everything’s blooming, the weather’s gorgeous, and you’re just weeks away from graduation.
One of my favorite things about spring sessions is how real it feels. Seniors are on the edge of this big transition, and you can see it in their faces. They’re excited, a little nervous, but so ready. Those emotions always shine through in the photos.
The only downside? Spring books up fast. Between sports, prom, banquets, and graduation prep, your schedule fills up before you know it. So if spring is your vibe, plan ahead and get on the calendar early.
So…When’s the Best Time?
Here’s the truth: the best time for senior pictures is the time that feels most like you.
If you’re a summer person who lives for dresses and sunshine—let’s do summer.
If you love cozy outfits and fall colors—fall is your season.
If you want something different—winter.
And if you want that “I’m about to graduate” feeling—spring’s your sweet spot.
No matter what season you choose, my best advice is this: book early. Senior year fills up fast, and the last thing you want is to scramble at the end.
